Pregnant Woman Dies At Civil Hospital Aizawl, Villagers Alleges 'Medical Negligence'

Civil Hospital Aizawl

Aizawl, August 23, 2022  : The combined NGOs and the Village Council of Hortoki in Mizoram have issued a press release in response to the death of a pregnant woman from Hortoki in Aizawl's Civil Hospital.    Mrs Zoramthari (31) of Hortoki Village, according to the press release dated August 23, 2022, has visited the government-run Civil Hospital Aizawl several times since August 4, 2022, for prenatal care. However, she was neglected by the hospital staff at the government-run hospital until the morning of August 18, 2022, when she died.

According to the press release, she went for a checkup on 4th August 2022 and was told that her due date was far away and was advised to return to the hospital on August 12, 2022, which she did, but was then told by the staff to return on August 29, 2022, because she was not yet ready to go into labour. Zoramthari began experiencing severe pain on August 17, 2022 and was admitted to the same hospital to give birth. Following an examination in the hospital, the staff informed her that it was not yet her time and that she had not gone into labour.

In contrast, Zoramthari continued to complain about severe pain, to which hospital nurses allegedly responded, "You've had three children, you'll deliver the baby with ease," and dismissed the problem without checking on her condition the press released said.

Zoramthari's condition reportedly worsened early on August 18, 2022, when she begged to be operated on. By 2 a.m., her pain had worsened. According to the press release when her caregivers asked if they should call the nurse, Zoramthari replied that she didn't believe they would let her go into labour and had given up hope, but as her condition deteriorated, a nurse was woken up and called for assistance, at which point she was no longer in a state where she could be saved and died at around 6:30 a.m.

The Hortoki Village Council and All NGOs expressed their displeasure with the treatment received by Hortoki resident Zoramthari at Aizawl Civil Hospital. In their press release, the group accuses the hospital's staff of medical malpractice and expresses outrage that her symptoms were dismissed by nurses without even being examined by a doctor. The Village Council and Combined NGos of Hortoki reiterate their belief that medical negligence occurred in order to treat the wealthy and powerful, and they hope that such an incident does not happen again in the future.
