Five killed in Mizoram road accident after Biju festival



West Phaileng 21.04.2023: A road accident in West Phaileng, Dinthar Veng Mizoram claimed the lives of five people, including an infant, on Friday morning. The incident occurred when a Pik-Up truck carrying passengers from Tuipuibari II in Mamit district to Marpara South in Lunglei district overturned on a steep hill near West Phaileng Dinthar Veng village.

According to locals, most of the passengers were from Marpara South, returning from celebrating the Biju festival, a traditional harvest festival of the Chakma community in Tuipuibari II. 

The pickup truck failed to climb an uphill road and rolled back into a cliff, injuring many and killing three people including an infant on the spot. Two injured, a man and a woman, died after being rushed to West Phaileng Hospital. The woman is the mother of an infant who died at the scene of the accident.

Young Mizo Association volunteers from W. Phaileng Dinthar and W. Phaileng rushed to the scene and the injured were taken to W. Phaileng Hospital. Four of the injured were referred to Aizawl. The deceased were all residents of Marpara South while the injured were residents of nearby villages of Marpara South.
