The Election Commission of India (ECI) will host a National Conference of State Election Commissioners (SECs) on February 24, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. State Election Commissioners from all States and Union Territories are expected to participate in the conference.
The national-level conference is being organised after a gap of more than 25 years. The last such conference was held in 1999.
Chief Election Commissioner Shri Gyanesh Kumar will chair the conference, along with Election Commissioners Dr Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr Vivek Joshi. The Commission will address the participants during the inaugural session.
State Election Commissioners will attend the conference along with their legal and technical experts and present their views on various issues. Chief Electoral Officers of the Election Commission of India from all 36 States and Union Territories will also be present.
According to the ECI, the primary objective of the conference is to strengthen coordination and synergy between the Election Commission of India and the State Election Commissions in matters relating to electoral processes and logistics, while functioning within their respective legal frameworks.
The conference will include discussion sessions on electoral laws, elector eligibility in States and Union Territories, and technological initiatives led by the ECI. These include the recently launched ECINET digital platform, Electronic Voting Machines, and other related subjects.
The ECI will also share its experience in the preparation of electoral rolls and the conduct of elections in accordance with the Constitution of India and the country’s legal framework.
State Election Commissions are constituted under laws enacted by respective States, as provided under the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments. They are entrusted with the superintendence, direction, and control of the preparation of electoral rolls and the conduct of elections to Panchayats and Municipal Bodies.
