Sairang 23.08.2023: In a devastating incident that unfolded near Aizawl, Mizoram, an under-construction railway bridge collapsed, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 17 workers' lives. The catastrophe occurred at Sairang in Aizawl district, triggering urgent rescue operations amid fears of more trapped workers under the debris. The mishap took place at the Sairang railway station construction site, a project aimed at connecting Aizawl to the national railway network.
As the clock struck 9:30 AM on Wednesday morning, the ill-fated bridge gave way, causing a significant section of it to crumble to the ground. At the time of the collapse, approximately 25 workers were believed to be present, out of which 17 victims have been successfully recovered from the wreckage. Heartbreakingly, one body remains visibly suspended amidst the wreckage, illustrating the magnitude of the disaster.
Leading figures from the Indian political landscape have expressed their condolences and grief over the incident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his sorrow through a statement issued by his office. The Prime Minister's Office announced, "Pained by the bridge mishap in Mizoram. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. Rescue operations are underway and all possible assistance is being given to those affected." The statement further disclosed that an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund would be extended to the next of kin of each deceased victim. Additionally, Rs 50,000 would be granted to the injured individuals.
Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga, deeply affected by the tragedy, expressed his condolences as well. He conveyed, "Deeply saddened and affected by this tragedy. I extend my deepest condolences to all the bereaved families and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. Sending gratitude to the people who have come out in large numbers to help with rescue operations."
