Aizawl, 24 June 2025 — The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Monday appointed Sharad Agarwal, a 1997-batch IPS officer, as the new Director General of Police (DGP) for Mizoram. He will succeed the incumbent DGP, Anil Shukla, a 1996-batch officer of the AGMUT cadre.
Prior to this appointment, Mr Agarwal was serving as the Special Commissioner of the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) in the Delhi Police. He is known for his extensive expertise in financial crime investigations and inter-agency coordination. He also held a distinguished tenure as a Joint Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), a role in which he received extensions owing to his commendable performance.
The appointment comes despite a strong appeal from Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, who had lobbied central government authorities to appoint David Lalrinsanga, the state's only serving direct-recruit IPS officer, to the top police post.
Expectations for Lalrinsanga’s appointment had been high, particularly after the MHA transferred him from his post as Inspector General (IG) of the Border Security Force (BSF) in March. The move was widely interpreted as a precursor to his taking charge as DGP, with several national media outlets reporting it as a likely outcome. A 1995-batch IPS officer, Mr Lalrinsanga is senior to the newly appointed DGP.
Mr Agarwal’s broad experience across policing roles in Union Territories and with the CBI is expected to bring fresh strategic direction to law enforcement in Mizoram, a state grappling with unique border and socio-political challenges.
