Aizawl , 24 June 2025 — The Mizo Language Development Board has announced plans to alter the official Mizo alphabetical order to address technical challenges posed by modern software.

The modification will reposition the Mizo letter 'Ng'. It will be moved from its current location between 'G' and 'H' to a new position following 'N' and preceding 'O'.

Speaking at a media workshop on June 23, Board Chairman R. Lallianzuala stated that the change is driven by the inability of current digital sorting systems to correctly process the traditional Mizo alphabet sequence.

"This is not a change based on any flaw in our letters or spelling," Lallianzuala said. "The Mizo Language Development Board has determined it is best to move 'Ng' simply for functional reasons related to software."

The chairman confirmed that the board has already made significant progress on the initiative and has consulted with the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), which is responsible for state textbooks. According to Lallianzuala, the SCERT is open to implementing the change.

The new alphabetical system is set to be introduced first to Anganwadi students. The board has reportedly engaged with the Department of Women & Child Development  which manages the preschool centers, to coordinate the rollout.
