New Delhi, August 7, 2025:

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially issued a notification today initiating the process for the Vice-Presidential Election 2025, in accordance with the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952. The notification, dated August 7, outlines the key dates and procedural details for the upcoming election, which is scheduled to take place on September 9, 2025, if a contest is necessitated.

The notification has been published in the Gazette of India and will be republished in the respective State Gazettes in official languages, as per protocol.

Key Details of the Election Process:

  • Last Date for Filing Nominations: August 21, 2025

  • Scrutiny of Nominations: August 22, 2025 at 11:00 AM

  • Date of Poll (if necessary): September 9, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM

  • Location of Polling: Room No. F-101, Vasudha, First Floor, Parliament House, New Delhi

The Returning Officer (RO) for the election is the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha, who has also released a public notice detailing the nomination procedures.

Nomination Process:

Nomination papers can be submitted at Room No. RS-28, First Floor, Parliament House, New Delhi, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM on any working day up to the final date.

Aspiring candidates must submit:

  • A certified copy of the electoral roll entry confirming their registration as an elector for a parliamentary constituency.

  • A security deposit of ₹15,000, payable either directly to the RO or deposited in the Reserve Bank of India or a Government Treasury.

  • Receipt of the security deposit.

Nomination forms can be collected from the RO’s office during the same hours.

The scrutiny of nominations will take place in Room No. F-100, Sangoshthi-2, Parliament House, on August 22 at 11:00 AM.

This notification marks the formal commencement of the process to elect the next Vice-President of India, whose role includes presiding over the Rajya Sabha and stepping in as Acting President if required.
