Heroin Worth Over ₹31 Lakhs Seized in Champhai; Woman Arrested

Champhai August 7, 2025 : Champhai Police  have seized a major heroin consignment valued at over ₹31.59 lakh (approximately $38,000 USD) and arrested a woman in connection with the trafficking attempt, officials reported Thursday.

The seizure occurred on Wednesday evening at the Khankawn Police Check Gate in Chalbawia Junction. During a routine inspection of a commercial Sumo taxi heading from Vaphai to Aizawl, officers discovered 1.53 kilograms of heroin.

The narcotics, packaged in 88 separate soap cases, were found concealed within two egg crates disguised as a shipment of ginger.

According to the police report, the driver of the vehicle claimed he was unaware of the illicit contents, stating he was merely transporting the cargo for another individual. Information provided by the driver led investigators to identify the primary suspect as Agnes Lalremsiami, a resident of Vaphai village.

In a coordinated operation with Dungtlang Police, Lalremsiami was apprehended in Vaphai later that day. She was subsequently transported to the Champhai Police Station and has been charged under India's Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (ND&PS) Act. Following a court appearance, she is expected to be remanded to judicial custody.

Officials highlighted that the seized drugs constitute a "commercial quantity" under the ND&PS Act. This classification means that if convicted, the accused faces a mandatory minimum prison term of 10 to 20 years, in addition to a fine ranging from ₹1 lakh to ₹2 lakh.
