Missing Mizo PhD Student's Body Found Amongst Others in Haryana's Canal

A missing PhD student from Aizawl, is identified alongside three others. The mystery surrounding their disappearance unfolds in Punjab and Haryana



Patiala 3 November 2023: The body of Lalnunthiangi (33) from Mission Veng, Aizawl, a PhD student at Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology, Patiala, Punjab, who had been missing since October 28, 2023, has been discovered alongside three other victims.

According to sources from Mission Veng, Lalnuntluangi, along with her friends, was on an outing in Patiala, Punjab, on October 28, 2023. She regularly contacted her mother, and the last communication they had from her was at 9:40 pm on that fateful day.

On October 29, 2023, her bag, identity card, and clothing were found in Bhakra Canal. The Patiala police were promptly notified and launched an investigation into the case. On November 2, four bodies were discovered approximately 100 kilometres downstream in the Tohana Canal, Haryana. Due to the advanced state of decomposition, a family member was summoned to identify Lalnunthiangi's body, which was confirmed at 11 p.m. on Thursday.

The identities of the other three bodies have yet to be ascertained, but they are believed to be Lalnunthiangi's non-Mizo friends who accompanied her on the outing and are suspected to have drowned. Lalnunthiangi's body is scheduled for a post-mortem examination this evening. The mysterious circumstances leading to her death remain unknown.
