INC-MNF coalition government to form in Mara Autonomous District Council

May 16, 2022; Indian National Congress (INC) and MNF have agreed to form a government in the Mara Autonomous District Council (MADC).

According to a report by Zalen , MNF & INC leaders and newly elected MDCs from the two parties met in Siaha today evening to discuss the formation of a coalition government in Siaha. CEM post will be held by H. Malvin, elected on the INC ticket from Phura constituency. The post of Dy CEM will be held by HC. Lalmalsawma Zasai, MNF candidate elected from Amotlah constituency while N. Viakhu, MNF, elected from Siaha South-II will hold the post of chairman.

INC will have three Executive members (EMs) and one nominated seat while MNF will have two nominated seats within the available 3 seats. In addition to this, Five EMs, Deputy Chief Whip and Vice-Chairman (Planning) will also be appointed from the MNF.

The report further states that elected  MNF and INC MDCs signed the agreement this evening. MNF and INC joint legislature party was also formed in MADC simultaneously.

The election of the new chairman will be held on Tuesday, May 18, 2022, after which it will be submitted to the Governor for approval.

It is important to note that in the recently concluded Mara Autonomous District Council (MADC) Election, BJP won 12  seats, MNF won nine seats and INC won four seats. No party was able to secure the 13 seats needed to form a government. While the MNF is part of the NEDA Alliance, the relationship between the party and its BJP partner has strained over the course of years, with this recent decision by the MNF to form a coalition government with the opposition party INC being a major blow to the BJP's hopes of forming a government in the southern District Councils.

The BJPs on their part have also not been completely willing to share power with the MNF, considering that in 2018 when the Chakma Autonomous District Council Election
delivered a hung result those elected from the rival parties BJP and INC decided to form an alliance, even naming it United Legislature Party (ULP), to keep the Mizo National Front (MNF) out.
